Course Title:   Curriculum and Instruction:  Improve Student Achievement

Course Description:

Curriculum and instruction is critical to professional development.  In this course you will learn effective strategies that improve student achievement.  You will research a specific topic in depth and apply what you learn to improve instruction in your classroom.  You can focus on a specific academic content area and the processes that are important to student achievement.  As you learn and apply the strategies and techniques, you will keep a detailed time log which will include what you read,  how you used it, and your reflection about the effectiveness these new strategies or techniques.  You will also have the opportunity to develop and share a final project to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate what you have learned.

Course Objective/Goals:

This graduate elective course is project-based and designed to enhance curriculum development and encourage individual growth.   It gives educators an opportunity learn and apply effective instructional strategies in a content area of interest.  This will be a three-credit partnership with Learner’s Link (Franny McAleer), and Chapman University.

This course requires that participants:

1.      Select a topic related to curriculum and instruction.

2.      Read 300 pages from professional books, journals, or Internet articles.

3.      Complete an Annotated Time Log which will include the readings and your reflection, application of what you read, as verification that you spent a minimum of 15 hours per semester unit for a total of 45 hours for a 3 credit course.

4.      Complete a related project or activity that is relevant to your curriculum and teaching situation and demonstrate application of what you have read and learned.

5.      Complete a one page reflection paper that documents what you have learned and how you plan to continue to use your new knowledge.

The instructor will be available throughout your work at www.learnerslink.com.

Method of Evaluating Student’s Performance:

Final grades will be determined with the following grading scale and will be based on the total number of points accumulated on the assignments of the course.

100 - 90 = A     89 - 80 = B      79 - 70 = C

The students will be evaluated in terms of the stated objectives using following point system:

  1. Log containing evidence of research and reflection                                               50
  2. Project demonstrating evidence of the application of what you learned                   40
  3. End of course reflection paper                                                                            10

Registration:  If you have already completed another course, send your name and email address to franny@learnerslink.com and the topic and resources that you will be using for the study.

End of Course Reflection  (10 points)

“Practice without reflection is not practice at all.”

Reflection is one way to dialogue with yourself about a learning experience.  The purpose of this short reflection is to help establish what you have learned while studying and researching for this course. Your reflection should answer the following questions:

1.                  Did I accomplish what I set out to accomplish?

2.                  What did I learn that was useful to me as an educator?

3.                  How did this learning change my thinking or practice?

4.                  What more would I like to learn about the subject?
